Hi again readers!
Last night I had an opportunity to attend a seminar put on by the wonderful ladies at MAC at the Bay in Mic Mac Mall. The seminar was scheduled for two hours and it was aimed to go over popular celebrity looks.
The classic smokey eye and old Hollywood red lip were the features of the evening.
Here’s the scoop:
The cost of the seminar was $50 completely redeemable in product. MAC does this all the time with their regular makeup service appointments. I LOVE this! I think this is one of the best options for a cosmetics company. “Let us teach you about our products for a cost, but the cost is simply buying the makeup you were going to in the first place and now we get to show you how to actually use it.” Fantastic! The actual class was about an hour and a half or so with some time at the end to pick out our product.
Back to the seminar….
Essentially the seminar focused on how to get that perfect end result we are all looking for with our makeup and the girls simply broke it down step by step.
Our instructors for the evening were the ever lovely and fabulous Ashley and Michelle (love these gals!). They each had a beautiful model sans makeup to start from the skin prep and follow through right to the end. Our models were Megan (another lovely MAC counter employee), with Ashley, and Katie, with Michelle. Two completely different skin tones, eye shapes, lips and hair color. It was fantastic seeing not only two different looks(in the end) but also two different models with different needs. Different needs resulted in different products which was a great learning experience for everyone in the class. Even myself! We all use the products differently and I love seeing how each person uses something. It’s an ever growing and changing industry and we never know absolutely everything at any given time. You still learn as you go!
Our seminar took place upstairs in a small room that was a part of the Bay. I believe they use it for training with their staff. It was a tiny room, poor lighting, but intimate and comfortable. As we arrived to the room as a group we were greeted with min bottles of water, chocolate hugs and kisses and brushes for our face charts which we would find on our chairs. The face charts were inside a sleek black envelope with a makeup stylized “T” showcasing up close a beautiful blue eye stating, MAC Technique across the top. The face charts were at the back of a great little note pad and we even got a MAC pencil for note taking.
At the front of the room were two chairs, a display with tons of products for them to use and our wonderful instructors with their models. To the left there was even a display with current popular celebrity looks. Anne Hathaway, Kim Kardashian, Jennifer Lopez and Demi Lovato to name a few. Each having a very specific ‘look’ often asked to be re-created at a MAC appointment, each look having a trend theme, or classic. It was very well placed and thought out.
We started with prepping the skin base, moisturizer, eye primer, mattefier, skin primer. Next we moved into the canvas, foundation and concealer! Each model had different skin types, so though the prep was similar, the products started to change. Different tones, (one an NC the other an NW) and different skin concerns.
Ashley and Michelle bounced off of each other really well as instructors.
They told us what products they were using, why, what brushes they were using and how. It was exactly the information not only the average customer was looking for, but even soon to be makeup artists. Half of our seminar class was filled with the current intake of students from the makeup artistry program at the Hair Design Centre and they absorbed everything like a sponge. Their questions were general as well as precise for both themselves as customers and themselves as future artists. It was wonderful to see them jotting down every little titbit of info they could get.
Throughout the class many asked questions and even Ashely and Michelle asked us for our favorite celebrity looks and engaged us all in conversation. It was a very relaxed atmosphere. Manager Diane popped in and chimed in every so often answering questions while Ashley and Michelle worked away showing techniques. Like I said before, a relaxed atmosphere. Very conducive to learning, but it still felt very professional.
I have to say my favorite moments were: passing around the products to feel, touch and play, Seeing how different the two models were, the instructors vast knowledge of not only product but makeup techniques and looks!
What I took away from the seminar was learning different techniques the girls used with their brushes and how they used the products differently. (yup! still learning!) I LOVE how Ashely did the smokey eye on Megan and I LOVED how Katie’s skin just glowed! Michelle gave her perfect JLo glow!
After the seminar we headed downstairs to pick out our $50 of redeemable product.
To anyone else in the Bay, it looked like a crazed sale at Macy’s during Black Friday on 5th Avenue… only more Canadian. Behaved, tame, curious and courteous. Our instructors became our go to sales clerks and the extra staff, Brandy and manager Diane, that were on counter were very helpful to all of us making sure we were al taken care of and helped if anyone had additional questions.

All in all it was a fantastic experience and I am looking forward to the next one. I love classes and seminars and this is one I would recommend to both the average makeup lover, the above average makeup lover and any makeup student out there, pro or just an avid lover of makeup.
I am signed up for a 1 on 1, 45 minute appointment with Michelle next month for their Fashion Forward event and I am looking forward to it. So much that I even have questions and techniques to be learned set out in my mind already.
If you’re from the HRM and interested in the next upcoming event (1 on 1 with an artist) call and book in with one of the artists! 466-2111. I believe there are still spots available!
Now I’ll be honest with you readers.
This IS the location I work at as an on-call artist, but I wanted to attend the class and learn. Yes. I still learned! Yes I know the instructors and staff personally, but I tried to set that all aside and take a look at it through the eyes as if I were only a customer which I often am (maybe too often! eek! lol)
Everything I talked about in this seminar review and run down is strictly my own opinion and thoughts and has nothing to do with the company nor is it the company’s view or opinions. It is all strictly my own.
If you have any questions… any… please feel free to contact me!
Is this the kind of seminar you’d be interested in attending in the future?
What kind of things would you like to learn in a seminar?
Have a great weekend readers!
PS: Want to know what a MAC addict gets for product?
I’m not a great lover of the mascaras from MAC, but Michelle often talks about the fabulousness of Extended Play so I thought I’d pick it up to try. I’ll be doing a review on it in the future as I try wearing it a bit more.
The fluidline on the top is a limited edition that came out a little while ago. It’s actually called Redhead and it’s actually for your brows. Though could be used as an eyeliner. Can’t wait to play with this!
I also jumped on board the In Extra Dimension train after seeing the beautiful glowing skin Michelle gave Katie! This will look BEAUTIFUL on brides this summer!
Lastly I stoked up on some Mineralize Skinfinish for my purse! It’s a fave MAC product of mine.
